Gen Z professionals are inclined towards full time office work; study reveals

The dynamics of the modern workplace are undergoing a profound shift, especially for Gen Z professionals, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by Adobe. The study, encompassing over 1,000 early-career Gen Z workers in medium- and large-sized US companies, sheds light on their perspectives regarding in-person office work.

According to a recent survey performed by Adobe, the results indicate that a majority of early-career Generation Z professionals, i.e. 63%, are now engaged in full-time employment inside a traditional office setting. Furthermore, a substantial proportion of these individuals, specifically 81%, have expressed the importance of the knowledge and skills acquired via their physical presence in a workplace environment.

The survey conducted as part of Adobe’s Future Workforce Study included a sample size of more than 1,000 individuals belonging to the Generation Z cohort who are employed in medium- and large-scale organisations based in the United States. Goldman Sachs is distinguished for its stringent Return to Office (RTO) policy, which promotes a five-day workweek at the office for its workers.

Louie Chavez, a 24-year-old analyst employed at Goldman Sachs, underscores the advantages of in-person work, specifically highlighting the enhanced efficiency and real-time communication it offers. My colleague, Mary Kate Viceconte, who is 25 years old and holds the position of associate, has a strong inclination for acquiring knowledge via direct interaction with experienced individuals who are in close physical proximity.

At Google, Andrew Abraham, 22, values the in-person experience and the perks of the Atlanta office, including activities like embroidery classes and on-site amenities. Flexibility remains important for him, balancing in-person collaboration with the option to work remotely.

Zachary Timms, a 25-year-old project engineer, emphasizes the positive impact of office relationships, citing the open floor plan and spontaneous conversations. Timms believes the fast-paced office environment contributes to his job satisfaction and builds camaraderie among colleagues.

While some Gen Z workers find value in the social network and collaborative aspects of the office, others argue that remote work has positively transformed their lives. The ongoing debate about the impact of Return to Office (RTO) policies on productivity and happiness remains a contentious topic, but for these Gen Z professionals, the preference for in-person collaboration is clear.
