Travelling to Germany for work, study, or leisure has become more accessible for Indian passport holders as the waiting time for visa appointments has been significantly reduced to a mere 5 days, with the possibility of securing an appointment in as little as two days.

This positive development has been applauded by Philipp Ackermann, Germany’s ambassador to India, who highlighted the improved service offered to Indian applicants, ensuring quicker issuance of visas.

Acknowledging this improvement, Ackermann stated to ANI, “We have in the last couple of weeks and months improved the visa service as such, that basically, your waiting time for an appointment is between two days and five days.”

India represents the largest group of international students in Germany, with recent data showing a remarkable 25% annual increase, totaling over 42,000 students pursuing various courses in the country. Expressing delight over this, Ackermann emphasized India’s growing presence as the leading international student group in Germany, further solidifying ties between the nations.

For travellers, the German missions in India issue two types of visas. The Schengen visa, also known as the “short-term visa” or “C visa,” is applicable for visits, business trips, or holidays up to 90 days. Meanwhile, the German National visa, known as the “long-term visa” or “D visa,” caters to longer stays, such as work, family reunions, or academic pursuits exceeding 90 days.

To acquire a German visa from India, applicants should follow a structured process:

  • Select the appropriate visa type.
  • Determine the application location.
  • Schedule an appointment with the VFS Global Visa Application Center.
  • Prepare the necessary documents.
  • Pay the stipulated visa fee.
  • Submit the application.

It’s advisable to apply for a visa well in advance, preferably three months before the intended travel date, considering the processing time, which ranges from 6 to 15 days or longer. While applications can be lodged up to six months ahead of the travel date, it’s crucial to secure an appointment promptly to avoid potential delays that might affect the travel schedule.

This streamlined visa process presents a significant convenience for Indians planning visits to Germany, fostering smoother travel experiences and reinforcing the strong cultural and educational exchange between the two nations.
